White-faced Saki
(Pithecia pithecia)
It is a species of Saki monkey and a type of New World monkey. They are active at day and night. This species lives in the understory and lower canopy of the rain forest, feeding mostly on fruits and other things.
There are
two recognized subspecies of this monkey:
- Pithecia pithecia pithecia
- Pithecia pithecia chrysocephala
Habitat:The understory and lower canopy of the rain forest from Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela.
Diet: This animal is omnivore so its diets consist mostly on fruits, berries, honey, leaves, flowers, small mammals, small birds, nuts, seeds, insects, and their favorite food are the bats.
How do you know if it is a female or a male in a easily way?
You only thing you have to do is to see their face, the male has black muzzle surrounded by creamy-white furs. The female has a bright stripe of hair from beneath each eye to corner of mouth or chin.
Size: The female can weight 3 pounds and measure 11.7 - 16.6 inches. And the male can weight 3.5 pounds and it can measure 13.8 - 18.7 inches.
Interesting Facts:
- Sakis are usually silent in captivity but emit a loud high pitch call in the wild.
- Most of their life is spent in the canopy layer.
- They travel alone or in very small groups.
- They are "seed dispersers" for many rainforest plants.
- The monkeys sleep all curled up in the trees!
- They are known by native people as "flying monkeys" because of the leaps and jumps of up to 10 metres which they make as they move through the forest.
